Programmes of Pillar 1

IOFS Food Balance Database

Strategic Objectives:

Assess and monitor MS food security needs for effective decision making

Strategic Objectives:

This program is part of the IOFS strategy which is “Government Enablement - Objective 2, Assess and monitor MC food security needs for effective decision making”

As a tool, the IOFS Database program's purpose is not only to prepare a data application. The IOFSDB program focuses on the enablement of the stakeholder persons and institutions and makes sure that all decisions are made on data-driven information. IOFSDB focuses on increasing the capacity of the specialists and their institution. IOFSDB will be a hub for this kind of effort.

Program Description:

Having a data and visualization application for OIC and by OIC-to-OIC countries makes it accessible for every stakeholder. This app is the focused and enhanced version of FAO Stat or other types of apps for OIC.

Background:

There are numerous data sources about food security all over the world on the internet. The biggest problem is these data are distributed in different sources and formats. They are often big and hard to analyze daily. However, these data are crucial for decision making and researches. The purpose of the IOFSDB program is to overcome this problem.

Goals:

Data Visualization and Interpretation

Develop visually appealing and user-friendly data visualizations, such as charts, graphs, and maps, to effectively communicate complex food security data. Use intuitive design principles and interactive features to facilitate data interpretation and understanding by diverse stakeholders.

Targeted Stakeholder Engagement

Identify key stakeholders, including IOFS member countries, policymakers, researchers, and international organizations, and tailor dissemination efforts to their specific needs and interests. Develop targeted communication materials, organize workshops or webinars, and establish collaboration networks to engage stakeholders actively in utilizing and interpreting the IOFSDB data.

Capacity Building and Training

Strategy: Conduct capacity-building programs and training sessions

Implementation:

  • Developing and publishing the web application
  • Enriching the data sources of the application
  • Improving data visualization
  • Accessing end-users and researchers

Outcomes:

Enhanced accessibility of comprehensive and relevant food security data and data products through the IOFSDB for decision-makers, researchers, and academicians in the OIC region. – Collaboration and knowledge exchange among OIC Member States by creating a shared repository of data, research findings, and best practices related to food security. – Continuous improvement and adaptation to meet the evolving needs of its users by actively seeking feedback from end-users, including scientists, researchers, and decision-makers, to enhance the platform’s functionality and usability. – More ergonomic user interface and user experience.

Success story

Relevance to IOFS's top strategies further manifests in the Government Enablement and the creation of an E-Center of Excellence (ECOE). The IOFS Database Program goes beyond merely presenting data; it focuses on empowering stakeholders with data-driven insights. The application which is available on https://iofsdb.streamlit.app with its numerous modules provide deep data analysis on food security data effortlessly. Users can change input and get the results dynamically for different years and countries. Besides they can learn from the documentation and download any data behind the visualizations.
