Senior officials of International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) and Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS) held a videoconference on June 6th to exchange information, explore joint actions for promotion of food security in OIC member states in the wake of the coronavirus spread (COVID-19) and discuss opportunities for joint work in the second half of 2020 and 2021.
Both sides reviewed efforts aimed to support the member states in their fight against the impending food security crisis and other socio-economic consequences of the global coronavirus pandemic.
The parties also discussed the joint actions for second half of 2020 and 2021, namely:
- Participation of IOFS in the proposed ITFC expert group meeting on food, fisheries, animal husbandry and forestry (4th quarter of 2020) and the Islamic Trade Fintech event;
- Implementing four (4) Reverse Linkage programs in identified agro-food sub-sectors e.g. Rice, Wheat, Cassava and Palm Oil;
- Joint launch of OIC Food and Agricultural Fair (Halal Food Industry);
- And other postponed joint events.
The meeting was very informative and productive. ITFC expressed interest in the B2B mechanism of IFPA that would facilitate food supply chain and the mechanism of private-sector advocacy that would address the perennial problems of post-harvest losses and food waste across OIC member states.
