World Economic Forum: Farms of the future: How can AI accelerate regenerative agriculture?
23 September 2024

Regenerative agriculture offers a vital pathway to enhance food security and combat climate change, addressing the urgent need for sustainable practices as global agricultural land degrades. Recent developments in AI can significantly accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture, especially in low and middle-income countries. As consumer preference shifts towards regenerative brands, the agriculture sector must focus on restoring soil health and biodiversity, while also reducing its significant contributions to climate change. AI can facilitate this transition through various applications, including geospatial imagery for landscape planning, AI-enabled digital extension services, pest prediction to minimize pesticide use, financial incentives via smart contracts, and rapid soil health assessments. However, to fully leverage these benefits, challenges such as reducing AI’s carbon footprint, optimizing data infrastructure, and establishing local service networks must be addressed. By integrating AI into regenerative agriculture initiatives, we can build resilient food systems capable of supporting a growing global population.
