We News: Niamey Hosts Conference on Climate Crisis, Food Insecurity
13 September 2024

An international conference on climate change began on Tuesday in Niamey, Niger, focusing on climate-related challenges such as floods and food insecurity affecting nearly 28 million people in the Sahel region and West Africa. Chaired by Keda Ballah, Chad’s Minister of Agricultural Production and Industrialization, the three-day event gathers experts from the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS). The conference aims to address the increasing frequency of extreme climate events and associated disaster risks. Ballah highlighted the rise in devastating floods and worsening food insecurity, noting significant gaps in implementing adaptation strategies. Issues include deficiencies in integrating resilience measures into public policies, inadequate technological adaptation, and limited external resource mobilization. CILSS, established in 1973 to address severe droughts, comprises 13 member states and focuses on food security and sustainable natural resource management.
