Qatar's agriculture sector is experiencing significant growth, contributing to the country’s food security and self-sufficiency. According to Mordor Intelligence, the sector’s market size is estimated at $170.95 million in 2024 and is expected to reach $223.10 million by 2029, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.47%. This expansion is supported by the upcoming National Food Security Strategy 2024-30, which aims to build on the successes of the previous strategy (2018-2023) by enhancing sustainability and incorporating modern technologies in agriculture. Key achievements include a notable increase in local vegetable production, which has nearly doubled in the past five years, and self-sufficiency in the dairy sector, with growth also seen in livestock, poultry, and fishery sectors. Despite Qatar’s challenging climate—characterized by low rainfall and high temperatures—the country has adopted advanced farming techniques such as hydroponics, smart irrigation, and aquaponics to optimize land use and improve produce quality. Hydroponics, particularly, is gaining popularity for growing local fruits and vegetables with minimal water resources. While Qatar still relies on imports for most of its cereal needs from major suppliers like Brazil, the United States, India, and Australia, efforts to boost local production through advanced farming techniques are underway.
