The Astana Times: EU, Kazakhstan Seek to Forge Stronger Ties in Agriculture
29 May 2024

Janusz Wojciechowski, the European Union (EU) Commissioner for Agriculture, led a significant High-Level Mission to Kazakhstan from May 27-31, accompanied by a delegation comprising 40 agri-food businesses and organizations from the EU. Recognizing Kazakhstan's pivotal role as a gateway to the Central Asian market, Wojciechowski highlighted the burgeoning trade relations between the EU and Kazakhstan, with agricultural exports amounting to 702 million euros in 2023. Kazakhstan's Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) with the EU has laid the groundwork for further collaboration, including negotiations on the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) for agricultural products and foodstuffs. Wojciechowski noted Kazakh consumers' growing interest in diverse culinary experiences, expressing confidence in the EU's ability to meet their expectations in terms of quality, safety, authenticity, and sustainability. The mission aimed to capitalize on this growth potential by strengthening trade ties and fostering collaboration between European and Kazakh agri-food businesses. Wojciechowski underscored the mission's significance in signaling the EU's commitment to enhancing partnership and bilateral trade in agri-food products with Kazakhstan, emphasizing the promotion of EU products, facilitating business connections, and fostering closer agricultural cooperation.
