Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Meets with Director General of IOFS
11 September 2024

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu met with Berik Aryn, Director General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS). During the meeting, they discussed current issues related to the collaboration between Kazakhstan and IOFS aimed at ensuring food security in the member countries of the Organization. Minister Nurtleu emphasized the need to enhance the effectiveness of IOFS projects by expanding cooperation with member states and involving domestic and international experts in agriculture. This would support the further development of this specialized body of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Director General of IOFS informed about the progress of several targeted projects, including those addressing global trends such as climate change, effective water resource management, and supply chain disruptions.

Particular attention was given to the project for establishing a Gene Bank in Kazakhstan, aimed at preserving agricultural biodiversity among IOFS member states.

The discussion also covered preparations for the 7th IOFS General Assembly, scheduled to be held in Astana in 2025, during which Kazakhstan is expected to assume the chairmanship of the Organization.

At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to continue bilateral and multilateral cooperation to address food security issues within the OIC space.

The IOFS was established in 2013 at the initiative of Kazakhstan, with its headquarters located in Astana.
