On September 13, 2023, the IOFS kicked off the Regional Conference: Resilient Agriculture in IOFS Member States – Climate Adaptation and Food Security, under the patronage of the Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Maritime Fisheries of the Republic of Tunisia, the President of the 5th General Assembly of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), in partnership with ICARDA; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, and FAO, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and GFCM. The conference aims to bring together key players in the agricultural sector, researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders to discuss the challenges posed by climate change and innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of food systems in the region of the IOFS.
The main themes of the conference are:
1. Agroforestry: Integrate trees into agricultural systems to improve productivity, environmental resilience and food security.
2. Sustainable Management of Agricultural Land and Water: Promote sustainable agricultural practices to preserve soil fertility, improve their productivity and effectively manage limited and dwindling water resources.
3. Strengthening the Resilience of the Agricultural Sector through Technological Innovations: Identify and implement climate change adaptation measures to mitigate negative impacts on agriculture.
4. Aquaculture and Climate Change: Explore the opportunities and challenges of aquaculture in the face of climate change and its role in food security.
Participants included representatives of agriculture ministries from IOFS member states including Chad, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Tunisia, Turkey, as well as other international and regional actors engaged in the fight against climate change. This diversity of participants creates a platform conducive to the exchange of perspectives, collaboration and expertise sharing, highlighting the importance of international cooperation to address the challenges of climate change and promote sustainable agricultural practices within the IOFS Member States.
