Green Climate Fund Board Approves Accreditation of Observer Status for IOFS
17 October 2024

Astana, Kazakhstan – The Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), a specialized institution of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has been officially granted accredited observer status by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Established in 2010 under the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, the GCF supports the efforts of developing countries in addressing the impacts of climate change, particularly in vulnerable regions. To note, GCF is the world’s largest climate fund dedicated to supporting developing countries

“We are honored to be recognized as an accredited observer of the Green Climate Fund,” said Director-General of IOFS, H.E. Ambassador Berik Aryn, “This recognition aligns with our mission to enhance food security across OIC member states, which are often disproportionately affected by climate change. Through this role, we will contribute to critical discussions and actions that mitigate climate impacts on agricultural systems and food security.”

The GCF allocates its resources equally between climate mitigation and adaptation, with at least half directed to the most climate-vulnerable nations. Since the launch of its first project in 2015, GCF has initiated over 100 projects, amounting to more than $9.8 billion in contributions globally.

“Food security is deeply intertwined with climate resilience,” highlighted Amb. Aryn. “Climate change is disrupting food systems, particularly in developing countries. As part of the GCF community, we aim to mobilize resources and partnerships to support sustainable agricultural practices, improve resilience, and ensure food availability for communities at risk.”

As an accredited observer, IOFS will engage with accredited entities managing GCF-funded projects worldwide. This position will also allow IOFS to collaborate with international stakeholders in streamlining food security strategies that address the pressing challenges posed by climate change.
