Atalayar: Morocco reaffirms its commitment to food security in Africa
18 July 2024

At the UN High Level Political Forum, Morocco underscored its commitment to enhancing food security in Africa, emphasizing its expertise in agricultural development and the pivotal role of fertilizers in transforming arable land into productive assets. Mustafa Terrab, Chairman of Morocco's OCP group, highlighted Africa's vast untapped potential, noting that the continent holds 60% of the world's unused arable land. He argued for a shift in global perceptions towards Africa, stressing its capacity to significantly contribute to global food security. Terrab pointed out that despite Africa being a major exporter of fertilizer-producing resources, it remains a net importer of processed fertilizers, which are often more costly due to importation. He urged for increased local production to lower costs and enhance accessibility, particularly for smallholder farmers across the continent. OCP has been actively involved in supplying customized fertilizers to over 40 African countries, tailoring products to local agricultural needs and supporting initiatives to alleviate the impact of price fluctuations and environmental challenges on farming communities.
