Al Jazeera: Famine looming in parts of Yemen, UN experts warn
19 August 2024

Acute malnutrition in Yemen is rapidly worsening, with famine looming in four districts, according to a recent report from the UN’s Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Technical Group. The crisis, primarily affecting the Red Sea coast, has seen a 34% increase in acutely malnourished children compared to last year, with over 18,500 children under five projected to be severely malnourished by year's end. Additionally, approximately 223,000 pregnant and lactating women are expected to suffer from malnutrition in 2024. The report highlights that all 117 districts in government-controlled areas are expected to face “serious” levels of acute malnutrition, with Mawza and al-Makha (Mocha) in Taiz province and Hays and Khawkhah in Hodeidah province projected to enter famine conditions between July and October this year. The IPC calls for urgent increased support to address the crisis, as current humanitarian funding levels are insufficient. The ongoing conflict, economic collapse, and the spread of diseases like cholera and measles are exacerbating the humanitarian disaster. The war, which has resulted in over 150,000 deaths and has displaced millions, continues to devastate the country, with Houthi rebels controlling major urban centers and the Saudi-backed government based in Aden.
