The Islamic Organisation for Food Security (IOFS), with the support of the government of Kazakhstan and in cooperation with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), has launched the project ‘Wheat Cultivation Development for Sustainable Development in Western Afghanistan’.
According to the IOFS press service, the project will be implemented in Zindejan province (a region hit hard by last year's earthquake) on the basis of 300 farms.
Farmers will be provided with high quality local wheat varieties and fertilisers, as well as productive farming equipment, it said.
The project is part of the larger Afghanistan Food Security Programme (AFSP).
IOFS Humanitarian Operations Manager Emre Yuksek said the initiative is an important milestone in replicating the wheat value chain model in other provinces of Afghanistan. He stressed that reducing dependence on imports and supporting local production are central to the AFSP programme.
Under the project ‘Wheat Development for Sustainable Development in Western Afghanistan’, IOFS aims to implement training and capacity building programmes for farmers in Afghanistan to increase wheat production (including effective use of fertilizers to improve soil fertility and crop yields, safe seed treatment methods to protect crops from pests and diseases, and effective sowing techniques). In the future, training in techniques to reduce harvesting losses and efficient use of seed is envisaged.
In the future, IOFS intends to implement this model of wheat cultivation in other provinces of Central and Western Afghanistan.
