IOFS PARTICIPATES AT THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON FISHERIES AND AQUATIC SCIENCES (SOFAS 2022) IN TRABZON, TÜRKIYE

On October25–27, Islamic Organization for Food Security participates at the International Symposium on Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (SOFAS 2022) in Trabzon, Türkiye. The event was organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Central Fisheries Research Institute (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry – Republic of Türkiye).

Fisheries and aquaculture from the food security perspective represent an important source of high-quality protein. According to FAO, aquaculture and fisheries combined account for approximately 17% of total animal-source protein for human consumption.

This symposium gathered around 200 participants, researchers and experts from 22 countries and aims to promote sustainable aquaculture methods and practices for advancement of the industry's development in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The activities of symposium include presentations of prominent international speakers on the latest advancements in genetic improvement and feed technologies, technical trainings, as well as field visits to aquaculture facilities.
On the sidelines of the event, IOFS delegation discussed possibilities of further cooperation with the GFCM regarding promotion of sustainable development of the aquaculture sector in the OIC countries, including capacity-building activities on efficient governance and the best practices in aquaculture and how to develop the concept of Aquatic Gene Banks in the MC’s, during this meeting, the GFCM officer expressed the willingness as well to develop close partnership with the IOFS.
