The IOFS and the WFP Discuss Humanitarian Food Assistance to Afghanistan
25 February 2022
On 25 February 2022, an Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) Team composed by Dr. Ismail Abdelhamid, IOFS Director of Programmes and Projects Office, Mr. Safwan Alsaadeh, Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Abdula Manafi Mutualo, Senior Liaison Officer, and Mr. Dastan Zholdassov, Program Manager, held a virtual meeting with a Team of World Food Program (WFP) in Afghanistan led by Ms. Mary-Ellen McGroarty, WFP Country Director, to exchange views on how the two Organizations could join hands in implementing suitable humanitarian food assistance programmes in Afghanistan.

After a detailed brief on its important humanitarian activities in Afghanistan, the WFP showed its readiness to provide technical and logistical support for the IOFS to be able to successfully implement the Afghanistan Food Security Program (AFSP), which was mandated by the 17th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on the Situation in Afghanistan, held on 19 December 2021 in Islamabad, Islamic Republic of Pakistan. In fact, the WFP welcomed the proposal for the IOFS to use its terrestrial and aerial local logistical network for distribution within the Flour for Humanity Programme, which is centered on providing wheat/flour for those in need.

In this context, the two sides agreed that the bilateral cooperation would be institutionalized through a MoU to be signed at the earliest opportunity, which will also be materialized through exchanges of visits and invitations to each other’s relevant events.
