IOFS Kicks Off its In-field Humanitarian Food Assistance Convoy to Afghanistan

On 15 April 2023, His Excellency Prof. Yerlan Alimzhanuly Baidaulet, Director General the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), arrived to the Afghan capital city, Kabul, to commence the in-field implementation of the Organization’s Humanitarian Food Assistance to the country, in partnership with the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS).

In the context of implementation of its mandate on the Afghanistan Food Security Programme (AFSP) provided by the 17th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on the Situation in Afghanistan, held on 19 December 2021 in Islamabad, Pakistan, and based on the generous support by the Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, the Director General of IOFS handed over a certificate to the ARCS President, Mawlawi Mutiul Haq Khales, as a symbolic sign for initating the distribution of the first IOFS Humanitarian Food Convoy to Afghanistan, which is composed of 280 tons of wheat, and infant supplies. H.E. Mr. Mohammed Saeed Al-Ayyash, Director General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation ( OIC ) Mission in Kabul, witnessed the solemn occasion.

The presence of Mr. Al-Ayyash was seized for bilateral consultations on how the Mission would continue its valuable support to all OIC Institutions, particularly the IOFS in its quest to successfully implement the AFSP. Another bilateral meeting was with Mr. Shafiqullah Attayee, CEO of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) to follow-up previous consultations on the matter of strengthening Afghan businessmen relationship with those of other OIC Member States, and to crystallize the Chamber’s proposal for the IOFS to convene an Afghanistan Agri-Business Forum in the second half of 2023.

Separately, the IOFS Director General had the chance to briefly meet and exchange views at the Kabul International Airport with H.E. Mr. Serik Zhumangarin, Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Trade and Integration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who was leading a delegation of Kazakh businessman that arrived to Afghanistan to discuss investment opportunities and strengthening transportation infrastructure, as well as expanding trade volume between the two countries.

The first day of the working visit came to an end with an iftar hosted by the Director General for the entire ARCS Team led by its President, which was another opportunity for consultations on how to further build a result-oriented partnership for the benefit of those in need in Afghanistan.
