The article by Mohammad Zafar  for ‘Muscat Daily’ reviewed food security state of Oman, that shows positive trends according to recent Global Food Security Index (GFSI) published Economist Impact and Corteva Agriscience. The country ranked 35th in the world and fourth in the MENA region. Advancing in food security indicators distinguished the Sultanate among others putting alongside with China (+13.7), Vietnam (+13.4), Bolivia (+12.2), the United Arab Emirates (+12) and Saudi Arabia (+11.8).

The GFSI index measured food security across 113 countries focusing on six indicators including food affordability, availability, quality and safety, sustainability and adaptation and becoming a policy formulation guide and forecasting tool for private, public sectors.

However besides presenting performance improvement in food security by number of countries, the latest index also revealed struggling global food system unprepared to the climate changes, bouts of conflict embarked in Ukraine. The report also showed deteriorated global food environment by insufficient investments and continued volatility, relating the latest price spikes to declining resilience in food system.

The 2022 GFSI emphasized significance of volatility in agricultural production, trade and supply-chain disruption, scarcity of natural resources, and increasing economic inequality in ensuring food security.
