DISREGARD FOR AGRICULTURAL LAND CONTRIBUTES TO GLOBAL FOOD INSECURITY, SAYS EXPERT

During the recent Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation forum issues of Food security were widely discussed, at the session titled ‘Food Security and the Future Challenges’, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Experts on the session noted that negligent attitude towards agricultural sector and problems of agricultural land generates challenges in food security of Arab region and globally, becoming a humanitarian tragedy and unavoidably leading to hunger and malnutrition.

Other highlights is about increasing gap between local food production and increasing consumption related to the population growth that can be shown by the global food spending increasing amounted US$ 2.6 trillion. People in average spending around 37 per cent of their income on food which ranges from 32 per cent to 43 per cent in Arab countries.

Another conditions, apart from increasing population growth, escalation of food safety and security challenges are identified by limited natural and agricultural resources and ineffective exploiting, transformations in food patterns, climate change problems, challenges faced by the food manufacturing industry.
The forum emphasized importance of coherent actions between countries in addressing global food security issues through advancing innovation in the food sector and adopting more effective and sustainable methodologies for managing crop irrigation and food production.
