WORLD ON VERGE OF FOOD CRISIS - AZERBAIJAN READY FOR ANY SCENARIO

Azernews.az reported about high global domestic food price inflation in almost all low- and middle-income countries. However, according to the article, high-income countries with high inflation rose as well. Among the most affected countries from Africa, North America, Latin America, South Asia, Europe and Central Asia noted author.

Fragile food supply chain due to the situation in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate changes was brought to the front of the geopolitical agenda and rised urgency of pursuing new ways to ensure food security. The global food prices rise doesn't stray from Azerbaijan, considering that the country hasn’t yet become 100 percent self-sufficient in food products. However, Azerbaijan is taking measures to realize this goal and the most recent data has proven it through figures such as providing with meat products by 90 percent, poultry meat - by 80 percent, and milk and dairy products - 85 percent, while in the upcoming years are expected to increase this volume.

Recently signed decree by its president I.Aliyev "On a number of measures to increase the level of self-sufficiency in food wheat" determined establishing a pilot project for food grains produced on farms using modern irrigation systems. Also the Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan adopted a resolution "On measures to regulate the export from the country of a number of basic food products included in the minimum consumer basket, and goods used in their production" with the purpose to protect the domestic food market. Fundamental pillars of the policy are providing basic foodstuffs, including grain, government subsidizing of local production, rather than importing goods. Another principle is the liberalization of prices for basic foodstuffs. Fighting against unfair competition is also prioritised.

Country’s arable lands also favourably contribute for the development of agriculture and increasing the level of food self-sufficiency. Mentioned measures will undoubtedly make a big breakthrough in the field of food security of Azerbaijan.
