Kazakh President stresses significance of IOFS activities during UNGA

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev delivered his speech at the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Strategy2050.kz informs with reference to the Akorda press service.

In his speech that opened the event, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that the 2030 agenda for the SDGs is a clear roadmap for humanity to reach the best future with everyone benefiting from social, technological and economic progress.
The Kazakh Head of State stressed that Kazakhstan shared the concern over the fact that the international community falls behind on SDGs. The President called for decisive action in the coming decade to ensure results.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev pointed out the full compliance of Kazakhstan’s ongoing economic, social and environmental policy with the 2030 agenda for the SDGs, expressing confidence that the country will create an inclusive society, ensure a sustainable economic growth and clear environment, and develop more workable and accountable institutions.
While implementing these objectives, the President accentuated the launch of the concept “Hearing State” that focuses on building up a dialogue among the government and the people.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also pointed out the need for modernization of the educational system, as well as development of a green and digital economy, infrastructure. According to him, these areas are powerful drivers of economic prosperity and progress for the entire humanity.
Speaking of Kazakhstan’s experience, the Head of State underlined that 80% of the SDGs are tied in the strategic programmes of the country.

“In 2018, in close liaison with the UN institutions, Kazakhstan rolled out an institutional architecture in support of meeting the SDGs, including the creation of the Governing Council. The first Sustainable Development Forum was the central part of the 2019 Astana Economic Forum. In July this year our country put forward the first voluntary national review of Kazakhstan”, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

Given the impact of the SDGs on global processes, the Head of State reiterated his view on that there could be no reassessment of the success of the SGDs solely in certain categories or countries.
The President noted Kazakhstan’s active engagement towards the SDGs regionally and internationally, and put forth certain measures.
First, according to the Head of State, it is necessary to ensure that financial resources channeled into the SDGs are used rationally.
Second, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev pointed out the significance of the objectives of the Islamic Organization for Food Security set up on the initiative of first Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev aimed at the issues of desertification, deforestation, erosion, salination and social security.
He expressed hope that all 57 OIC countries will join the initiative in the near future.
Another efficient measure announced by the President is the creation of the Sustainable Development Centre for Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, which, according to him, could speed up the implementation of the SDGs within Central Asian and Afghanistan.
