On 22 January 2023, His Excellency Mr. Yerlan Baidaulet, Director General of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), initiated his participation at the 45th Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural & Social Affairs (ICECS) preparatory to the 49th Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) slated for 16-17 March next at Nouakchott, Islamic Republic of Mauritania, with a meeting with the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), His Excellency Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, with whom issues of mutual interest were discussed, particularly his personal support to IOFS activities, specifically the implementation of the Africa Food Security Initiative (AFSI).

In fact, the Secretary General appreciated the important work being undertaken by the IOFS and recommended that specific projects be designed and implemented for the benefit of Member States affected by famine and
hunger crisis.

Later, the Director General was received at the premises of the Permanente Representative of Russia to OIC by His Excellency Mr. Ramazan G. Abdulatipov, the Head of the Mission, and was able to exchange views on strengthening bilateral cooperation with this important country that enjoys the observer status membership to OIC. The two side also looked at the potential food assistance that Russia may provide to some Member States, particularly those in Africa.

Finally, the Director General had the opportunity to address the 45th ICECS august gathering to, inter alia, provide a detailed account of the ongoing IOFS activities. The Member States, on their end, positively considered the draft IOFS Resolutions with some important amendments to improve the same and finally approved for onward adoption by the 49th CFM.

It should be mentioned here that the 45th ICECS will proceed with its work until 24 January 2023.
