Arab News: Saudi farmer turns worm waste into wealth in innovative move
25 July 2024

Mohammed Al-Shaer, a farmer from Al-Dhafir village in Baha, Saudi Arabia, has pioneered a successful vermicomposting technique that converts garden waste into valuable organic fertilizer. Starting with a modest setup of a single tank housing 2,000 worms, Al-Shaer's initiative has grown over the past year to include four tanks. His vermicomposting operation produces over 300 kg of nutrient-rich compost, benefiting approximately 250 trees on his farm. This organic fertilizer accelerates plant growth, enhances fruit production, and improves soil health by optimizing nutrient cycling. Al-Shaer aims to expand his project further, promoting eco-friendly agricultural practices and advocating for the use of organic fertilizers over chemical alternatives. Local agricultural authorities have shown support for his efforts, recognizing the environmental and agricultural benefits of vermicomposting in Saudi Arabia.
