SAUDI ARABIA IMPROVING FOOD SECURITY AND ACHIEVING SELF-SUFFICIENCY, SAYS MINISTER

The country initiated measures towards enhancing agriculture to enhance the operational and production levels of food systems and improving food security indicators to ensure strategic food self-sufficiency whilst the issue of climate change, water resources scarcity is increasing, noted Saudi deputy minister of environment, water and agriculture Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mushaiti during the Arab-Hellenic Food Conference.

Saudi Arabia implemented a new strategy reflecting developing effective agricultural and marketing services, higher productivity level and food quality through introducing technological innovations via local, regional, and international partnerships.

Minister also reminded that Covid-19 pandemic deteriorated nutrition conditions, increasing the number of people vulnerable to food insufficiency by 132 million worldwide.

The Minister also emphasized importance and immediacy of utilizing UN FAO digital platforms such as Sustainable Food Value Chains Knowledge Platform that provides a user-friendly gateway to practical guidance and information on the development of Sustainable Food Value Chains (SFVC) and sharing experience in irrigation and agricultural technologies and food industries.
