UAE sets out six-month food security action plan to cut waste and prioritise local produce

A UAE food security task force under the chairmanship of the Food Security Council, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Mariam Al Mheiri has kicked off an action plan to reduce waste, encourage local products and strengthen technology facilitation to take measures on the present challenges. The council urged to apply local and federal levels agriculture and food data to diminish food waste, boost agriculture programs and accelerate price regulations on food imports to support local products.
 
Another set of measures anticipated inducing the hospitality and catering sectors to procure local agriproducts, to regulate retailers’ promotion activities that can impede profitability of local producers. The UAE Food Security Council also called to increase implementation of new technologies in the agricultural sector for which a special working team be established to introduce food security issues solutions within 6 months.
Minister Al Mheiri emphasized the significant role of the Council in implementing UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051 and ranking at the highest position in the Global Food Security Index by 2051 and noted that prompt and timely response to emergencies of global challenges to tackle food insecurity remains a pivotal item on the agenda.
