In the article by Juliana Agbo for Nigeria’s news site ‘The Nation’ elaborated in-depth study of the climate change impact to aggravation of hunger and malnutrition. Author addresses comprehensively effects of warming climate on the Nigerian food manufacturing sector.
Author claims that countries with the higher burdens of hunger are mainly exposed to the adverse effect of climate change and consequently have low capacity to adapt, which in turn decreases food production, quality and availability, and threatens food security system. Author refers to the latest report conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) that correlates warming climate and annual occurrence of food disasters.
Other highlights in the article include reviews on low crop yields and soil degradation that resulted from extreme climatic events such as flooding, heat, and drought that exacerbated by the fact that around 70 per cent of Nigerians are small-holder farmers with relatively low-level technologies.
According to the author, some medium- and long-term responses will need immediate enabling action and planning, and immediate implementation of investments, particularly in forestry, livestock breeding, seed multiplication, research and development, innovation and knowledge.
